One might not immediately think of gourmet food and stylish eateries when it comes to Streatham, Clapham’s run-down relative.

Hopefully pretty well, as the pub’s stylish wooden flooring, fireplace and semi-open kitchen is immediately seductive, there’s a not to be scoffed at hearty two course menu for only £10, free Wi Fi and complimentary artisan bread with your meal.

It’s ticked all our boxes so far.As we peruse the menu a friendly waitress recommends the Cahors "Malbec", Cedre Heritage 2009, a young-tasting red which we glug down to our heart’s content, with even more relish when we learn that all the wines are sourced from independent producers and great care goes into the selection process.Similar effort goes into the menu; the food hails from local producers, and every dish is made freshly on the premises.

The juicy Banockburn rib steak comes with heaps of a creamy wholegrain mustard sauce, the grilled Portobello mushroom and tomato offering temporary distractions from the tender meat – this is filling winter food at its best - but it’s the roast duck breast that initially perturbs us with its caramelised pear tasting of vanilla and cinnamon, only to turn out to be an excellent marriage.

A three course meal for two with wine is roughly £85.

The purpose of this emotional outpouring is to inform you that a mainstay of my youth, and particularly of my mugging years (victim, rarely perpetrator), was an area situated half-way between my house and my school, called Streatham.

It was with some surprise, therefore, that I recently began hearing rumours of a new restaurant in Streatham, The Manor Arms, garnering some highly favourable reviews.

For the drinkers, The Manor Arms boasts a strong array of beers, on-tap and in-bottle, and a phenomenal wine-list: their Lebanese wines, in particular, are a surprise and a treat.

It appears that I have been neglecting Streatham, an old friend, and inadvertently relegated it to little more than a mere contact-lens dispenser.

In my absence something has been happening, the winds of change and all that, and at the heart of this is the unexpected, unpretentious, but immensely satisfying Manor Arms, surely one of the best restaurants south of the river.

It has retained all the things that make for a good local; original features, a friendly atmosphere, good beer on tap, comfortable seating, and has added to that with good quality pub food and a quieter dining area.

The menu is well designed, with enough choice for the diner, but not so many items that the kitchen struggles to produce quality food.

There is a small selection of starters, followed by pizza, salads, and burgers.

The bar also features beers from local breweries, such as Herne Hill, and so was a hit with my partner.

I opted for the potted shrimps to start from a special Halloween menu, these came with Melba toast and a salad garnish.
